A one-day workshop on ethics and social accountability in ICT
The challenges of virtuality and the cloud:
the implications of social accountability and professional ethics
To be held at Middlesex University, Hendon Campus, Hendon, London (Committee Room 1, Town Hall building).
This event is a joint initiative between the International Federation of Information Processing (IFIP) Working Group 9.2 on Social Accountability and ICT, Special Interest Group 9.2.2 on Ethics and Computing, and the BCS ICT Ethics Specialist Group. 201502-MDX_Workshop on Ethics – FINAL Programme (PDF, 624kb)
As their contribution to the ETHICOMP 2015 conference, IFIP’s Technical Committee 9 and several of its working groups plan to organise a track that focuses on cloud computing and virtuality:
“Virtuality and Society: Virtuality constitutes both the social and the technical modes of existence. This strand of the track will explore the globality of virtuality; the complex, emergent and changing nature of this field; and act as a location for transdisciplinary work on virtuality.
Cloud Computing and Society – Social and Ethical Aspects: If technology and society really co-shape each other, then what kind of society is likely to emerge from the hyper-centralization and reduced transparency of cloud architectures? What possibilities are there in the future for a human-centric form of cloud computing?”
Diane Whitehouse, Penny Duquenoy, Kai Kimppa, David Kreps, Norberto Patrignani are therefore keen to encourage you to consider submitting to this ETHICOMP 2015 call
(the submission date is now 23 February 2015).
Our joint initiative on Monday, 23 February 2015, will act as a kind of “dry-run”. It is a workshop at which you will have the opportunity to share preliminary ideas, initiatives or positions around cloud computing and virtuality, and the opportunities and challenges they present with regard to social accountability and ethics.
Members (and friends) of IFIP’s TC9 working groups and special interest groups are welcome, as are members of the British Computing Society’s ICT Ethics Specialist Group.

- By Friday 6th February 2015, your confirmation that you plan to attend this Middlesex-based workshop together with, on the same date:
- By Friday 6th February 2015(*), an 80-word abstract of your proposed presentation.
- By Friday 13th February 2015(*), your PPT for a 15/20 minute presentation.
(*) These two items will be circulated in advance to attendees or else uploaded as appropriate onto the IFIP WG9.2 website (http://ifipwg92.org).

(1) Travel. Travel to and accommodation relating to the workshop is at your own expense. Catering during the day will be covered by the workshop organisers. Attendees are encouraged to take dinner together on the evening of Monday (self-paying).
